Abstract

Several methods have been used for teaching English in Ecuador in the last 30 years, but their effectiveness has been limited. After several years of communicative approach use, just recently the real possibilities of students to learn English has been taken into account. Although daily communication situations are sought, which is the basis for teaching and learning, traditional approaches are carried on and there is a lack of attention to the students’ diversity and their needs. For this reason, the objective of this work is to establish the teaching of English as a teaching for diversity by its own communicative bases and the need to change the Ecuadorian reality. The methodology is based on the use of theoretical methods such as historical analysis and analysis-synthesis, induction and deduction among others to establish a comparison between the potentialities of the communicative approach in the world and Ecuador. A historical analysis on the teaching of English was achieved about Ecuador High School, which constitutes an important starting point for proposals aimed at attention to diversity in Ecuadorian students and their effective communication in the English language.
