The ideas set out in this article are based on the theory of competence assessment in Basic Education students at the University of El Salvador. These theoretical assumptions have been taken as a function of contrasting them with the assessment process desired by the current national curriculum and the demands of the country's educational communities. Theoretical definitions of competences are presented in coherence with the postulates of 21st century education and the ways in which they are approached methodologically, from the perspectives of teacher trainers in the area of Basic Education. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to reflect theoretically on the assessment of competences and the teaching approaches that have predominated and limited, in turn, the development of these competences in the students of the Basic Education degree course at the University of El Salvador.
