Abstract

The nature and scope of the substantive functions that distinguish the universities, relates to the responsibility that they acquire with the society. The binomial University - Society, impact on the sustainable development of the region, through two aspects: the constant update of issues of research, plans and programs of study and the scientific training of students through the implementation of compulsory social service. The social service is an activity that can be done in the public sector, inside or outside of the University and private institutions. The activity improves the scientific training of students and facilitates contact with society. The criteria that define the place of performance of the service are given by the prestige that the participating institutions have, with regard to the attention of the demands of the society. The flexibility of the service, allows students freely choose the area that want to strengthen their training, according to their own interests, and according to the fulfillment of the legal framework that defines their stay in the institution.
